Marriage registration and marriage visa

Qualifications & requirements

There are two sets of requirements to satisfy: the rules for registering a marriage in Thailand, and the separate rules for the marriage visa that follows. Both are set out below.

For marriage registration — both parties must

  • Be at least 20 years old, except with court permission for those aged between 17 and 19.
  • Not be legally incompetent.
  • Not be siblings by blood, whether from the same parents or just one parent.
  • Not be adoptive parent and adopted child of each other.
  • Not already have a spouse.

Women who are widowed or divorced

A woman may remarry once any one of the following applies:

  • At least 310 days have passed since the divorce or the death of her spouse.
  • She is marrying the same spouse again.
  • She has given birth since the marriage ended.
  • She has obtained court permission.
  • She holds a medical certificate from a Thai hospital proving she is not pregnant.

For the marriage visa

ThaivisaMarriage assists foreign spouses of Thai nationals in applying for the one-year Non-Immigrant O (Non-O) marriage visa, which permits you to live in Thailand once the marriage is legally registered.

  • The marriage must be legally registered with a Thai national.
  • Proof of marital status — the marriage certificate and wedding photographs.
  • A minimum of 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account, held continuously for two months.
  • Or a monthly income above 40,000 THB, or a certification letter from your embassy.
  • Additional documents such as a criminal record check or health certificate may be requested in some cases.
